Tapan Munroe, PhD

Tapan Munroe is a recognized author, speaker, consultant and advisor in the area of economic and policy analysis. His expertise includes regional economics, environmental economics, economic impact studies, and high-tech industry analysis. His research and writings focus on the Silicon Valley and Bay Area economies and the study of the Dot-Com boom-bust cycle and the resurgence of high technology industries.

He is a Member of the Advisory Board of City National Bank in San Francisco, a Member-Investor with Keiretsu Forum, the nation’s largest business angel investment organization, Emeritus Member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Pacific Rim Studies at the University of San Francisco and a Member of the University of California President’s Board on Science and Innovation.

He has been a director of LECG, LLC, a world wide consulting firm .Currently he is an affiliate of the firm. He has served as the Chief Economist for Pacific, Gas and Electric and as a Director of the Capital Corp of the West, a bank holding company located in Merced, California. Tapan is also a former President of the National Association of Business Economists, Bay Area Chapter, a former member of the National Petroleum Council Task Force on Oil Prices, former Quarterly Chair for the Commonwealth Club of California and the former Chair of the Economics Committee for Edison Electric in Washington, D.C.

He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Colorado where he was awarded a fellowship and membership in the Phi Kappa Phi Omicron Delta Epsilon. He is also a graduate of the University of Chicago Executive Training Program, a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and the University of Augsburg in West Germany, an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley and a Professor and Chair for the Department of Economics at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. In 1998-1999, he was the holder of the Kiriyama Distinguished Professorship for Asia Pacific Studies at the University of San Francisco.

A widely published author; Tapan recently authored the book “Dot-com to Dot-bomb – Understanding the Dot-Com Boom, Bust and Resurgence”. His forthcoming book is entitled-“Silicon Valley: Ecology of Innovation”. It will be published in Spain in the fall of 2008 by the Science Parks Association of Spain. He has been a columnist on economic issues for the San Francisco Examiner and the Journal of Corporate Renewal. He is currently a columnist for the Contra Costa Times and several other MediaNews papers. Tapan is a commentator on both regional and national radio and TV news programs including KRON TV (channel 4), KGO TV (Channel 7), CNBC in Los Angeles and New York, the Dow Jones Investors Network and the Bloomberg News Service.
